Little Painted Cupboard

What do you think of this little painted cupboard I found yesterday?

To give you some perspective, the ironstone pitcher is just a tad smaller than one that would come with a wash bowl.

Might this have been made for a young girl? I find it charming.

My guess is long ago it had a backsplash that came off rather crudely. It has also been used as a work table.

There's an accumulation of old dirt on the front of the drawer and some paint stains on the top. I can't bring myself to touch it other than a light dusting. What would you do with a really old piece that is kind of grungy?

I'm thankful I was at the right place at the right time and it didn't get hauled off to the dump.

Do the knobs seem a little heavy to you? I'm not sure if they're original to the piece.

I think the autumn colors and grain-painting make it look woodsy; the soft palette feminine.

It would fit in my dream house. What do you think? Do you like this look or is it not your thing?

  1. I love it! And yes, I agree about the handles - I'd do something much more lightweight or even wood.

  2. I think it's wonderful. The knobs are a bit heavy, but they're so unusual and interesting that I would leave them there. You found a real treasure.

  3. That is pretty! I do like the worn look, and I actually like the handles as well as they remind me of a cupboard my late grandmother had. As for this one, is sanding it and painting it in pastel colours an option? If it is very damaged maybe white all over with some distressing of the paint might be an idea?

  4. I love it. I like grunge. I like old. I like to keep things in their natural state. Don't quite get the need to paint everything sight Keep it as it is. Will look lovely with Autumnal pieces displayed on top. :) Best wishes, Tammy

  10. I DO love this look, but I can't seem to get away with it. I would appreciate it for what it is. But my hubs and I would both love a rustic cabin to put it in! Thanks for the good word on my shop! SO nice to know you came by for a look.

  11. Thanks for stopping by for a visit! Your cupboard find is wonderful! I think the knobs on the drawers add interest, but perhaps the knob on the doors could be changed to something that link in with the drawer knobs. I tend to give old furniture a wash down with detergent and water to get all the dirt off, giving it a good dry as you go. I would then use a mixture of beeswax (small amount) melted into some linseed oil or similar and use that to polish and condition over the wood. It allows the wood to air and brings out the wood conditioning it. Enjoy! Hugs Sharm

  13. Hi there! So glad you stopped by my blog. I went scrolling through a few of your last posts, and now I'm dying for fresh tomatoes. As for apples, I froze some last year, so maybe a crisp is in order for tonight.
I would have grabbed that little cupboard too. After that, I would have to live with it for awhile before I decided what treatment, if any I wanted to give it.

  14. What a fun find! Did you get it for free? I think I'd give it a cleaning and, depending on how it looks in person, possibly, paint or it, maybe just on the wood parts and leave the parts where they painted the bouquets. How fun! I love deals like that! And, you can never loose with more storage and places to set things. :-)

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment on my blog. That's how I found your blog. I took a quick look around and love the photos you post. Gorgeous and interesting! I'll definitely be adding you to my list of blogs to follow!

  16. I love this cupboard and would be delighted to own something like it. We've just come across two large chests that belonged to my husbands aunt. They are over 60 years old and need a good clean and some repair but I'd like to keep them as they are. I love old things and especially things that have memories.
Thanks for stopping over at my blog. I just replied to you explaining that we had been snowed in so you blog made me chuckle when I say the snowy header. LOLL
I've just been scrolling down your blog and love your photography. Beautiful.
