Lucky me. I was the winner of Sharon Odegaard's giveaway for this year's Grow Your Blog Party. Sharon lives in sunny California and for weeks I've been drooling over the lovely nature photography on her blog Leaning Into Life.

These came in the mail wrapped in white tissue. I can't tell you how cheery they made me feel. They smell heavenly. Lemongrass is my absolute favorite scent, with lavender a close second.
Thank you, Sharon.

We have a cold spell going on here on the Keweenaw Peninsula. Our high temp today was -8 degrees. Tomorrow is expected to be colder. Most of the local schools were closed today and probably will be tomorrow as well. Stay safe and warm wherever you are.
Happiness is a warm house and a sunny day. It has been a long winter and it's not over by a longshot.

I brought one of my geraniums up from the basement where they have spent the winter under fluorescent lights. Though they've been neglected and have gotten leggy, the promise of spring is in their earthy smell.

I hope you're weathering the winter wherever you are. It has been brutal and tragic for so many.

Stay warm and safe.
What do you think of this little painted cupboard I found yesterday?

To give you some perspective, the ironstone pitcher is just a tad smaller than one that would come with a wash bowl.

Might this have been made for a young girl? I find it charming.

My guess is long ago it had a backsplash that came off rather crudely. It has also been used as a work table.

There's an accumulation of old dirt on the front of the drawer and some paint stains on the top. I can't bring myself to touch it other than a light dusting. What would you do with a really old piece that is kind of grungy?

I'm thankful I was at the right place at the right time and it didn't get hauled off to the dump.

Do the knobs seem a little heavy to you? I'm not sure if they're original to the piece.

I think the autumn colors and grain-painting make it look woodsy; the soft palette feminine.

It would fit in my dream house. What do you think? Do you like this look or is it not your thing?
So far, we've had three hard frosts and freezing temps are in the forecast for the next couple of nights.

Before covering my tomato plants with a tarp, I grabbed as many cherries as I could in case they don't make it. Too bad over the winter I gave my food dehydrator to the Goodwill. I bought it about fifteen years ago and never used it. Seems like whenever I break down and get rid of something (including digital files), I end up needing it again.

The apples are from one of several heirloom trees that grow on our land. They make the best apple crisp, though it took me 40 minutes to peel and slice them because they're so small. It was so worth it.

In the spring of 2012, we had 80 degree days the end of March and then it went back to winter. We had zero apples, this year the trees everywhere are loaded.

There are lots of bushes and shrubs with berries on them. Lots of chokecherries, mountain ash, rugosa rose, plants I don't know.

The wild strawberries were the biggest and best I've ever seen, though they were a month late.

It was a bad year for mosquitoes, flies, and earwigs. Tonight I saw a mouse in my workshop. I thought it was the one building around here that was mouse-free. Ha!
One of my fondest childhood memories is summer vacation at grandma's camp. It was little more than a shack on homesteaded land on a small inland lake not far from where we live. My father and grandfather built it in the 1940s using whatever materials they could scrounge. It had low ceilings, linoleum floors, gas lights, and a wood-fired cook stove in the summer kitchen. We hauled water from the lake for sponge baths and washing dishes. Trips to the outhouse after dark were always kind of scary.
The farm table, where we ate our meals and in the evenings the grown ups played cards, was covered with a piece of oilcloth that was tacked to the underside. It was practical in a camp where even the simplest conveniences were lacking.

I think I need an oilcloth tablecloth for my kitchen table. Spills and crumbs could be easily wiped away and it would be a lot less work than having a tablecloth in and out of the washer and dryer. Easy so far, right?
Not so fast....

Here's what I found in my online oilcloth search: if you're looking for something subtle and stylish, you need to go to Europe. Seriously. Gingham checks and summery cherry patterns are pretty, don't get me wrong, but I'm looking for something quieter and simpler that I can live with day in and day out.

European oilcloth also comes in wider widths. That's important to me as I don't want a skimpy overhang.

I discovered that oilcloth is popular in the UK (as well as France and Sweden), which led me to a fabulous website called Not on the High Street, which is a British 'Etsy-like' marketplace offering products from multiple vendors. Not all ship to the US, but many of them do. I'll pay the extra postage to get what I want.
The following post is devoted to....Tomato Love.

Brought to you by a lucky lady who was able to stay home on a misty day and hang out with her plants and camera. How cool is that?

My half dozen tomato plants are growing on the edge of a raspberry patch that I tilled and covered with clear plastic for the summer. I just removed the cover. I think it did the trick, as I don't see any runners.

When I planted the berries, I didn't think about all the snow that would get piled on them over the course of the winter. Every spring they had broken canes and never did well. This will be my new spot for vegetables or maybe raised beds.

.

I started these Seeds of Change 100% Certified Organic Red Cherry Tomato seeds over the winter and planted them in early June. These are the BEST tomatoes I've ever grown.

Luckily, the deer don't like them, though the buggers will eat the blossoms.

They are a little larger than the cherry tomatoes I've seen at the market. They're firm and have a nice flavor.

Just six plants and we're overrun with tomatoes.

Can they be frozen. Has anyone tried it?

I'm pretty impressed with the yield as our last hard frost was June 30, and we had a frost a few nights ago that left film of ice on my upper windshield and the roof of my car. Nothing was covered the night before, so I immediately sprayed them down with the hose. I thought for sure my morning glories and the tomatoes were goners. Close call.
I never knew tomatoes were so beautiful. Guess I'm too used to those sad little things in the plastic containers in the produce aisle.
There is something satisfying about growing things, don't you think?

I planted this herb garden in front of our Finnish aitta (granary) shortly after we moved here. It has been badly neglected for many years.

After weeding, tilling, raking, and leveling, it's time to get it ready for spring planting.

I don't have enough sandstone for the paths, so I'm putting down wood chips that I got for free from the utility guys who were working on the county roads this summer. It will at least keep some of the weeds at bay. My new neighbor brought me a load of composted cow manure. Sweet.

I'm digging up Black-Eyed-Susans and transplanting them in front of the big pine. I like the vibrant Fall color.

Planting a northern garden can be tricky. Around here nothing gets babied. It makes it or it doesn't.

Lavender grows well, though mine have never been pruned and are getting woody. It is one plant I'll always have in my garden. On a summer day there might be a hundred bees on the flowers. I'm leaving spots for new transplants.

Baby's breath also likes this dry and sunny space. It was huge and wild, but I had to cut it back in order to till.

Every year I marvel at how well the heather is doing. I remember ordering two plants from a catalog at least 15 years ago. The flowers are starting to turn brown, but they are lovely and delicate during the summer. They're planted right along where my husband throws snow. Every Spring I come out and rough them up because they're so matted on the ground. I always think of them as growing in Scotland or the U.K., but they also thrive in my garden in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Go figure.
I've never had much luck with hollyhocks, so this year I started them early from seed. They're hearty plants. Too bad the deer love them.

How do you like how I've fixed the missing window pane? Too bad I can't Photoshop all the repairs around here. Even on a gentleman's farm they are never ending.
It seems like whenever I'm working on a task that feels more like a chore, I find excuses to do something else....clean a closet, scrub the faucet with a toothbrush, haul out a bunch of stuff and take pictures. Ha!

Yesterday I stopped at our local Goodwill store and bought three bags of crocheted doilies. Some were older, some had stains, and a couple had 'issues.' They were stuffed into three gallon size storage bags and were priced at .99 cents each. How could I not buy them? Or as our daughter says, "I couldn't afford NOT to buy them."

Anyway, how many women do you know who get in the mood (at least for taking pics) after spending three bucks? Guess I'm a cheap date.

But what I really want to talk about is how you stage your photo shoots.

I have a few places in my house where the light is good at certain times of the day. The brightest room hands down is the living area. Unfortunately, it isn't a room that I can easily set up and leave as a 'studio-like' space.

So, when I take pictures there, either for this blog or for Etsy or eBay, I have to stage an area.

I'm almost embarrassed to show you this; our dumpy, little farmhouse isn't much, but it sits on a gorgeous piece of property. That's a whole nother post.

OK, what the heck....if I can't be myself and learn something from this blog, then what's the point of blogging?

So here goes.....

Welcome to the mess behind the scenes!

You can see some of the newly washed doilies drying on towels on the back of the sofa and my makeshift backdrop (a piece of vintage wallpaper) taped onto the open door. If you look real close you'll see the table leg is propped up on an old cellphone battery to level it. I picked up that shabby little octagon, wicker table at the Salvation Army for $7.99 and use it all the time.

Why am I telling you all this? Because I'm curious to know how you set up for your photos, and also to clear up any misconceptions you might have about mine, such as that somewhere in my house I have a pretty, vintage wallpapered bedroom. :-)

So tell me, do you have a studio or dedicated space or do you shoot on the fly? What kind of camera do you use? Are you shooting on manual or automatic? Do you usually use a tripod? Do you have a favorite lens? That sort of thing....
I am so hoping to learn some of the tricks of the trade. Who better to ask than my real live blogger friends?
Hello....

Well I hope you're surviving the winter....there can't be too many more months of it, right?

I haven't posted since Valentine's Day, mostly because my less than a year old computer's operating system crashed. After spending what seems like countless hours on the phone with tech support, I'm finally back up and running.

Now that I have something to plug my camera's card reader into, I'm back to my old tricks. ;-)
There is something about old photographs....I never tire of looking at them and wondering about the lives of the people in them.

These photos came from local estates. They're one of those things that often don't sell. I can't bear to see them thrown away, which means I have lots of them.

The woman on the right is handsome, don't you think? She looks 'well-bred' and likely is from a family with money. She might even be college educated. So elegant!

The young lady on the left is probably an immigrant. When I zoomed in on her shoes they looked quite worn. Her pose is so relaxed.

She is a beautiful woman. I imagine with her hair unbraided she'd look like a nymph in the forest.

I love this image; it reminds me of National Velvet. This girl looks like a princess. Why do you suppose she's wearing a glove on her right hand?

Have you ever seen more perfect bangs? She too has that sweet look of innocence.

Thanks for looking!

Here's wishing you all a lovely day....Friday is the 1st of March. Hopefully, Spring is not far behind.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Just thought I'd share some photos of the new man who came into my life today. Actually, he's really just a boy.

He followed me home after I turned down our road this afternoon. We played a little game: I'd drive a few feet and he'd follow, when I stopped he'd lick the salt off my car. Repeat. This went on for about twenty minutes. When I pulled up to the house and opened the car door, I called to him and he walked right over then followed me around like a puppy while I filled the birdfeeders and fed the woodstove.

I think he's one of the twins I have been feeding this winter along with mom. I'm sure they've been holed up in the cedar swamps since it's been so bitterly cold. I haven't seen them for a several weeks. Today was in the mid-twenties.

He's a little buck. He didn't mind me touching and petting him, but he flinched when I touched his antler nubs. They're probably tender because they're growing.

Hello!

I hope the weather has warmed up wherever you're at. It was one chilly week here in the Copper Country. It was lovely being able to stay home and not have to brave the cold and wind and icy roads.

I'm already lovin' retirement!

These hats were from a partial estate that I purchased a couple of years ago. The gentleman I bought them from told me they belonged to his deceased mother who had been a milliner in Chicago for several large department stores.

I know what you're thinking....I'm sure few of us would sell things that belonged to our mother, especially if she had made them herself. Believe me, not everyone is sentimental.

The hats were stored in this fabulous, fabric covered, oval box with a pretty, paper illustration on the lid. Though I've already sold quite a few of the hats, I still have several, plus loads of trim and ones she never finished. I just love the soft faded colors, don't you?

I will, as time permits, show you some of the other things that came from this estate. Of course, they will eventually all be sold. I must also make money (translate: I can't keep it all). It seems with most things--though there are a few exceptions--I am satisfied to enjoy these wonderful, old treasures for a bit and then let them go.

If you haven't entered my giveaway, please check out the previous post and leave a comment. I'll draw a winner on Feb 1st.
First, I want to thank Vicki at 2 Bags Full for hosting this awesome Grow Your Blog party. Without Vicki, no party. I know what a huge undertaking it was for her to put this together, as there are 420 bloggers signed up (you can find the complete list here on Jan 19th).

So what is this blog about? My profile pretty much sums it up: I love old stuff. I'm living my dream life with my husband of 30 years on a hobby farm in the north woods. I love traveling, photography, music, literature, graphic design, gardening....my interests are continually evolving and endless. I'm passionate about things I see in the world that are not right, and though I sometimes feel powerless, I am never without hope.

Many of the blogs participating in GYB are having giveaways, mine included. As a newbie blogger it's my way of saying thank you for stopping by and getting to know me.

Words of wisdom from my mother: give a gift that you would like to receive.

For my first giveaway, I'm giving a pretty pink, mini-Reisenthel collapsible basket. I've used these baskets for years and have several of them in different colors and sizes. The basket in the photos is mine, but the winner will be sent a brand new one in its original packaging.

I also need to include something vintage--'cause that's my thing--so I'll also send the winner this pair of pinky-peachy, hand-crocheted pillowcases. Wouldn't this design make luscious frosting on a wedding cake?

To be honest, I've never really considered myself a 'collector' in the same way as someone who collects Roseville Pottery, or English cups and saucers, or music boxes, or Fire King, or whatever.

I have a lot of stuff, don't get me wrong, it's just that there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to the madness, nor is a lot of it particularly valuable. I don't know why I'm attracted to the things I collect, all I know is that I like them.

I especially like ephemera: old photographs, vintage greeting cards, correspondence, receipts, road maps and travel brochures, Valentines, and odds 'n ends.

Which brings me back to collections. As I sort through this menagerie, I'm finding lots of linens and buttons and lace and patterns. I don't even sew, so I'm not sure how over the years I have amassed so many of these things. Some of the more utilitarian linens I use, such as ticking pillow covers. They are simply the best if you have down or feather pillows, as the quills don't poke through. But all the other stuff? Is it the color, the graphics, the texture, the history? Or am I just a hoarder? That isn't even funny.

As I'm rummaging in my own junk room, I'm looking for something special since I'm participating in the Grow Your Blog party starting this Saturday. In keeping with my collecting pattern, I guess I'll know it when I see it.

Stop back on Saturday morning to see what I've decided upon. This giveaway is open to anyone, anywhere with one caveat....you have to tell me what you collect!

I'm so happy that my junk room is now primed and on its way to being somewhat organized. I'm going to live with primed walls for awhile. I have so much to do in the upstairs of this house: walls to rip out, windows to replace, floors to refinish, shelves to build....for now, done is better than perfect.

I wish I had taken before photos, as this room and our upstairs hallway were painted glossy, dental equipment green. My daughter's school friend called it 'The Emerald City.'

I had no sooner put my paint supplies away and the sun came out, so I grabbed my tripod and camera and tried to capture the lovely light that streamed in through the south window. I already love this space! It was a bit hard to move around because I have boxes and bins stacked up in the middle of the room and along the walls you can't see.

I took a bunch of photos using different ISOs, shutter speeds, and f-stops. I'm strictly shooting on manual, so it's pretty much trial and error. I was into photography many years ago, but that was long before digital. I think manual cameras, like my favorite Pentax Spotmatic with a broken meter, were easier to operate. My New Year's resolution is to learn how to use this camera!

That's a vintage SS Queen Elizabeth candy tin in the wire basket. In the woven basket underneath, I store fancy linens: doilies, wedding hankies, etc.... I paid $1 for it on the second day of a yard sale. The roses oil painting was from one of my estate sales, but it didn't sell.
The three chromolithographs (one is sitting on the wooden Finnish suitcases and the other two are on the floor) are my latest Goodwill finds. They are marked: Copyright 1898 The Ullman Mfg. Co. New York. I left the stickers on and was going to zoom in and show you what I paid, but then they might end up in my future Etsy store, so maybe I'll keep the price a secret for now. Etsy store: another New Year's resolution.
I picked up this pretty print at the Goodwill a couple of months ago. The colors are so gentle. I really don't have wall space to hang art because my house has too many south facing windows and anything exposed to strong light fades. I do love sunlight, though, especially during our long winters.

I'm looking forward to showing the other side of the room, but first I have to figure out what to do with the piles of stuff. HA!

Hope you're finding wonderful treasures. Thanks for reading....

In which thrift stores do you find your best stuff? If you're smart, you're probably not tellin'.

I have favorite thrift shops in every city I visit. Over Christmas break I found this three piece, brown transferware bowl and pitcher set at St. Vinnie's in Drayton Plains, Michigan. It is marked in script "Virginia" on the bottom of each piece. The pitcher has a good chip on the rim, but the bowl is nice. The small cup on the window was a bonus.

The set was marked $25. Since it had sat unsold in the store since October, it was marked down 25 percent. It cost me less than $20 including sales tax. I just liked it....so it came home with me. :-)

Now for my secret: If you're ever in the Pontiac area, be sure to check out the St. Vincent dePaul store on Dixie Highway in Drayton Plains and also The Salvation Army on North Perry Street in Pontiac. Sadly, I only get down that way a few times a year, so I won't mind if you snap up the bargains!

Happy Hunting!
Just a quiet, winter evening at home. Our daughter has gone back to Boston, my husband is in bed nursing a cold, and I'm lovingly wrapping ornaments to put away for another year's Christmas tree. The tree is again as bare as the day we brought it in.

What's the weather like in your neck of the woods? Ours is unseasonably mild, high-forties and sunny. No complaints from me, though I'm not foolish enough to think it will last....

Have you found any treasures lately? I had a ball out picking this past week and even ended up finding a few keepers.

The pretty cup and saucer is marked "Summer Glory" Royal Albert England. I couldn't resist it at $1.99. I'll grab a little bit of spring wherever I can find it....

The two small plates are Syracuse China (.49 cents each). I'm a sucker for restaurant supply dishes and have collected several sets in different patterns. I like the scalloped edge on the pink and white plate, but I rarely see this pattern in my travels; when I do it's either a lone saucer or badly scuffed.

I think I'm in love....this old bowl is so elegant and the towels are my favorite fabrics and colors. They have already found a home in my linen closet.

I spent about $30 and had some much needed fun. I picked up a few old and well-made antiques to resell on eBay and a few things to put away for the Etsy store I haven't yet opened. ;-)

Happy hunting!

And a Happy February 1st To You.....

Just think.....only a couple more months of winter, depending on where you're at. I'm ready for spring.

I'm more than ready.....in fact, I now have an official case of cabin fever. I'm dying to get outside. I want to build something. Or prop something up. I want to see how the blueberries and rosa rugosa that I planted last spring are doing. Did my trees make it? In November I planted two white pines next to the new tractor building; they're out there somewhere buried under three feet of snow. I want to hang out(side).

Tell me this, is cabin fever contagious? Check out my newest favorite website:
Aren't these a hoot? If you're old enough to remember Valentines like these.... my condolences. ;-)

They are also quite large (about 10 inches tall). The upper portion on each card has a small grommet so that the head swivels and can fold to fit in an envelope.
I scanned them at 300dpi. They should print up nicely on your b&w or color printer.

Hello. It's a cold winter day in the Copper Country, so I'm staying inside and doing a little housekeeping. For me that means organizing ephemera and putting things back in place after my daughter's visit over the Holidays. She likes old cards and paper, too. The hum of the scanner was constant while she was home.

This morning I found a stack of old Valentines she left on her dresser, so before I put them away I thought I'd scan a few and post them on my blog. Maybe you have a Valentine project and can use them?

All I can say is, "they sure don't make 'em the way they used to."

Aren't these 1930s Valentines adorable? I'm amazed at how the colors are still so vibrant after all these years.
Several years ago I made personalized gift cards using scans of turn of the century Christmas cards. I used snapshots that I had taken of family members and "photoshopped" their faces in place of the ones on the original cards.

My brother became the jolly Santa ready to descend the chimney; the rosy-cheeked girls sledding down the hill had my nieces' happy faces. You get the picture. It was trial and error, but fairly easy once I got the facial proportions right. I printed them on natural fiber card stock on a high-quality color printer. They were so cute! I think everyone liked them better than their gifts. I gave a complete family set to everyone.
What kinds of fun and creative things do you do with vintage cards? I'd love to see your creations. Enjoy!
Even though it was quite cold and lightly snowing, at the crack of dawn vendors began arriving and setting out their wares on the snow covered steps.

What an interesting assortment of Soviet-era antiques and collectibles. Very few of the pieces were priced. Because Russian was the only language taught in schools up until 1990, few older Lithuanians spoke English. That's OK, I was content to just look.
